Assignment 1: It’s in the Syllabus!

Instruction: Take the quiz on your syllabus. The quiz is on Blackboard.

Assignment 2: Write Some Email

Review the suggestions for writing effective emails.  Then write the following three emails:

  1. Write me (Professor Matz) asking for help on an essay or a concept in the course.
  2. Write me (Professor Matz) explaining why you missed class and what you can do about it.
  3. Write a member of the Mason Korea University LIfe staff asking about a how you could start a new RSO (Registered Student Organization) for students who enjoy hiking.

For all these emails you can make up your questions. You do not need, for example, to have a genuine question for email #1, really to have missed a class to write email #2, or have a genuine policy question for email #3. The goal here is to show how you can write a professional email for each of these situations.

Each email should have

  1. A subject heading
  2. A salutation
  3. Your question in the body of the message
  4. Your signature

The emails will be evaluated on how clearly and professionally they lay out the question and its context.  They will also be evaluated on the appropriateness of their form and language, as well as the professionalism of the writing, which should be grammatical, easy to understand, and free of proofreading errors.  There is no set length for the emails.  It is up to you to decide on the appropriate length for each one.

Write your emails in a Word or other word processor document, with each of the three emails on separate pages.  Give your emails header information as follows, as if the email was actually sent:

From:
To:
Subject:
Date:

Do not send me actual emails.   When you finish, upload your work to the assignment space on Blackboard.
